How to Use Perplexity AI for Internet Searches

Perplexity AI gives you a direct answer to your question — with sources — instead of a list of links to click through.

    1

    Open Perplexity

    ~15s
Go to perplexity.ai in any web browser, or download the Perplexity app from the App Store or Google Play. You can search immediately without creating an account.
    2

Ask a question in plain English

    ~19s
Type your question the way you'd ask a knowledgeable friend. Full sentences work better than keywords. "What causes high blood pressure and what can I do about it?" is better than "high blood pressure causes."

    Quick Tip

For health questions, ask Perplexity to "summarize what medical sources say" and check the cited links before acting on anything.

    3

    Check the sources

    ~16s
Each numbered citation in the answer links to a real website. Click through to at least one or two sources to verify the information before relying on it for an important decision.

    Warning

Perplexity can misread or over-summarize sources. Always verify medical, legal, or financial information with a qualified professional.

    4

    Use Follow-up questions

    ~15s
After getting an answer, type a follow-up question in the same thread. Perplexity remembers the context of your conversation, so you can dig deeper without re-explaining the topic.
    5

    Try the Focus feature

    ~15s
Click the Focus button (or the magnifying glass with options) to narrow your search to YouTube, Reddit, Academic papers, or News. Select YouTube and search a how-to question to find tutorial videos directly.

Perplexity AI is a search tool that works differently from Google. When you type a question into Google, you get a long list of links and have to click through several of them to piece together an answer. When you type the same question into Perplexity, it reads those sources itself and writes you a clear, direct answer — then shows you exactly which sources it used so you can verify them.

The result is something like having a well-read research assistant who can skim 10 articles and give you the key points in 30 seconds, with footnotes attached.

Perplexity works in a web browser at perplexity.ai, and there's a free mobile app for iPhone and Android. No account is required for basic searches, though creating a free account lets you save your search history and follow up on previous searches.

To search, type your question in plain English — the same way you'd ask a person. "What is the difference between a Roth IRA and a traditional IRA?" or "What are the side effects of metformin?" or "How do I dispute a charge on my credit card?" Perplexity reads recent web pages, academic articles, or news sources and synthesizes an answer with numbered citations in the text.

Each citation links to the original source. This is important: always click through to verify information before making decisions, especially on health, finance, or legal matters. AI can misread or misrepresent sources, and Perplexity is no exception.

After getting an initial answer, you can ask follow-up questions in the same thread. Perplexity keeps the context of the conversation, so you can type "Tell me more about the Roth IRA income limits" and it will understand you're continuing the same topic.

The Focus feature lets you narrow where Perplexity searches. Options include All (general web), Academic (research papers), YouTube (finds relevant videos), Reddit (finds community discussions), and News (recent articles only). Selecting YouTube and searching "how to replace a bathroom faucet" is an excellent way to find tutorial videos quickly.

Perplexity Pro (~$20 per month) uses more powerful AI models from OpenAI and Anthropic in the background and allows uploading files for analysis. The free tier is sufficient for everyday research needs.

Google is still better for finding local businesses, checking hours, shopping for specific products, or anything that requires a map. Perplexity is better when you have a genuine question that needs a synthesized answer rather than a list of links.
