    1

Find the podcast app on your phone

    ~27s
On an iPhone, look for the purple app with a microphone and sound waves — it is called Podcasts and is already installed. On an Android phone, open the Google Play Store, search for "Spotify" or "Google Podcasts," and download one for free. Spotify works on both iPhone and Android.

    Quick Tip

If you do not see the Podcasts app on your iPhone, swipe down on the home screen and type "Podcasts" in the search bar — it may be in a folder.

    2

Search for a topic you already enjoy

    ~16s
Open the podcast app and tap the Search or Browse icon (usually a magnifying glass). Type in something you enjoy — for example, "history," "gardening," "true crime," "relaxation," or the name of a topic you love. A list of shows on that topic will appear.
    3

Pick a show and listen to one episode

    ~24s
Tap on a show that looks interesting to read its description. Then tap on any episode title to start listening. The audio will begin playing through your phone's speaker. Use the volume buttons on the side of your phone to adjust the sound.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: Start with a shorter episode — 15 to 30 minutes — to see if you enjoy the show before committing to a long one.

    4

    Subscribe to shows you like

    ~16s
If you enjoy a show, tap the Subscribe, Follow, or plus-sign button on the show's page. This saves the show to your library and automatically downloads new episodes when they come out. You will find your subscribed shows in a section called Library or My Podcasts.
    5

Listen with headphones for better sound

    ~25s
For the best experience — especially in a noisy environment — use wired or wireless headphones. Plug regular earbuds into the headphone jack (if your phone has one), or pair wireless earbuds or headphones via Bluetooth. Most podcast apps also let you adjust the playback speed — slowing it down slightly can help if a host speaks too fast.

    Quick Tip

Many public libraries offer Bluetooth headphones for borrowing if you want to try them before buying.

A podcast is like a radio show you can listen to any time, on any topic you can imagine. There are podcasts about true crime, history, comedy, gardening, cooking, sports, health, personal finance, religion, current events — almost anything you are interested in. And unlike radio, you choose when and where to listen, and you can pause, rewind, or skip ahead any time you want.

Listening to podcasts is free. The vast majority of podcasts cost nothing — the creators make their money through advertising, donations, or sponsors. You do not need a subscription to get started. You do need a smartphone or computer and either Wi-Fi or a cellular data connection.

Podcasts are stored and played through apps called podcast players. Some popular ones include Apple Podcasts (built into iPhones for free), Spotify (free with occasional ads), and Pocket Casts (a paid app many frequent listeners prefer). If you have an iPhone, Apple Podcasts is already installed and free — you do not need to download anything.

Podcasts typically come in episodes, like chapters of a show. A new episode might come out once a week, daily, or sporadically. When you find a show you like, you can subscribe to it — which means new episodes automatically appear so you never miss one.

People listen to podcasts while doing other things: walking, driving, cooking, doing housework, or relaxing in a chair. The audio comes through your phone's speaker or headphones. Many people find podcasts a great way to learn, stay entertained, and keep their mind engaged during otherwise quiet time.
