How to Scan QR Codes (and Spot Fake Ones)

QR codes are everywhere now. Here's how to scan them safely and avoid scams.

    1

Scan a QR code on iPhone

    ~21s
You don't need a special app. Open the Camera app and point it at the QR code — hold it steady for 1-2 seconds. A yellow notification banner appears at the top of the screen with the link. Tap the banner to open the website. That's it!

    Quick Tip

Make sure you're in Photo mode (not Video or Portrait) for QR codes to scan automatically.

    2

Scan a QR code on Android

    ~17s
Most Android phones: open the Camera app and point at the QR code. If a link doesn't appear, swipe across to "More" in the camera and look for "Scan QR code." Alternatively, open Google Lens (the Google app → tap the Lens icon) and point at the code.
    3

When QR codes are used legitimately

    ~24s
Legitimate uses include: restaurant menus, event tickets, product packaging, official government websites, NHS check-in points. In these situations the QR code is safe to scan. A real QR code at a restaurant will take you to their menu — not ask for payment details.

    Quick Tip

Before scanning, check the physical QR code hasn't been tampered with — criminals sometimes stick fake QR stickers over real ones on parking meters and restaurant menus.

    Spot a scam QR code

    ~26s
Be suspicious if a QR code: arrives in an unsolicited email or text; is on an unofficial-looking card or poster; takes you to a site asking for your password or bank details; comes from a stranger. When you scan a code, check the URL in the preview BEFORE you tap to open it. If it looks odd (misspellings, strange words), don't tap it.

    Quick Tip

Scammers use QR codes specifically because people trust them. Always preview the URL before opening.
