RAM stands for Random Access Memory. Despite the technical name, the concept is straightforward: RAM is the temporary workspace your computer uses while it is running programs.
Think of RAM like the surface of a physical desk. The bigger the desk, the more things you can spread out and work on at the same time. When you open a web browser, a document, a video call, and a music app all at once, each one takes up space on your "desk." If the desk fills up, you have to start stacking things — and your computer slows down because it has to dig things out of storage (which is much slower) to bring them back to the desk whenever you switch between programs.
This is different from your computer's storage, which works like a filing cabinet. Storage is where your files, photos, programs, and the operating system are permanently kept when the computer is off. RAM is erased every time you turn the computer off — it is only meant for the things you are actively working with right now.
How much RAM do you need? For basic everyday use — web browsing, email, video calls, and watching videos — 8 GB of RAM is the minimum you should consider. It handles these tasks without too much strain. If you regularly have many browser tabs open at once, use Microsoft Office or Google Workspace, or do light photo editing, 16 GB makes a noticeable difference. Creative professionals who edit video, work with large audio projects, or run multiple demanding programs simultaneously benefit from 32 GB or more.
Here is a practical sign that your computer might not have enough RAM: the fan runs loudly, the computer slows down significantly when you have several things open, or you see a spinning wheel or hourglass frequently when switching between programs. These are symptoms of the computer running low on RAM and compensating by using much slower storage as temporary space.
One important caveat: on most modern laptops, RAM is soldered directly to the motherboard and cannot be replaced or upgraded later. This is why it is worth buying enough RAM when you purchase a new laptop rather than planning to upgrade afterward.
