    Screen Resolution Explained — HD, 4K, Retina, and What It All Means

    Understand what pixels are

    Every screen is made up of thousands or millions of tiny colored dots called pixels. Each pixel can display any color by combining different amounts of red, green, and blue light. Resolution is the count of how many pixels the screen contains, expressed as width × height. A screen with 1920×1080 resolution has 1,920 pixels across and 1,080 pixels tall, totaling about 2 million pixels. 4K has about 8 million pixels — four times as many.

    Learn the common resolution names

    720p (1280×720) — standard HD. Looks adequate but soft on larger screens. 1080p (1920×1080) — Full HD. Sharp and clear for most screens up to 27 inches. 1440p (2560×1440) — QHD or 2K. Noticeably sharper for computer monitors. 4K or 2160p (3840×2160) — Ultra HD. The current high-end standard for TVs, monitors, and premium laptops. When a TV or monitor advertises "4K," it means 3840×2160 resolution.

    Quick Tip: For a laptop you use at a desk, 1080p is fine. 1440p is a meaningful upgrade. 4K on a laptop screen smaller than 15 inches is hard to tell from 1440p for most people and uses more battery power.

    Understand pixel density and why screen size matters

    Pixel density — measured in pixels per inch (PPI) — tells you how tightly the pixels are packed. A 1080p screen on a 13-inch laptop has much higher pixel density than a 1080p screen on a 55-inch TV, because the same number of pixels is spread across a much smaller area. This is why a 1080p laptop screen looks sharp while a 1080p TV can look soft on a large display. Higher PPI means sharper text and images.

    Know when 4K actually makes a visible difference

    On a TV, the benefit of 4K over 1080p becomes more visible as the screen gets larger and as you sit closer. At typical living room distances (8 to 12 feet) on a 55-inch TV, some people can see the difference and others cannot. On a computer monitor at desk distance (2 to 3 feet), the difference between 1080p and 4K is clearly visible. On a phone held in your hand, anything above 1080p looks sharp to the human eye — the very high resolutions found on premium phones (1440p) are more about marketing than practical benefit for most users.

    Your content also needs to be in 4K to benefit fully from a 4K screen. Standard HD content displayed on a 4K screen is upscaled by the device, which looks better than on an older HD screen but does not match native 4K content in sharpness.

    Screen resolution describes how many individual dots of light — called pixels — make up a display. A display with more pixels packs more detail into the same physical area, producing a sharper image. A display with fewer pixels looks slightly rougher at close range, especially when displaying text or fine details.

    Resolution is expressed as width by height in pixels. A 1920 by 1080 display — written as 1920×1080 — has 1,920 pixels across and 1,080 pixels from top to bottom. The shorthand "1080p" refers to this resolution. A 3840 by 2160 display — called "4K" or "2160p" — has four times as many pixels as 1080p, arranged in the same way but much more densely.

    Here is the progression most people will encounter, from lowest to highest: 720p (1280×720) is called HD and is rarely used in new devices today. It looks soft on screens larger than about 27 inches. 1080p (1920×1080) is called Full HD and remains perfectly sharp for most people on screens up to about 27 inches. 1440p (2560×1440) is called QHD or 2K and is noticeably sharper than 1080p on computer monitors and laptops. 2160p (3840×2160) is called 4K or Ultra HD and offers the highest sharpness widely available in consumer devices.

    "Retina" is Apple's marketing term for any display that is dense enough that individual pixels are not distinguishable at a normal viewing distance. It is not a specific resolution — different Apple devices use different resolutions under the Retina label. What it means in practice is that text looks very sharp and smooth on those screens.

    Whether you can actually see the difference between resolutions depends on two things: the screen size and how far away you sit from it. The closer you are and the larger the screen, the more visible the difference becomes. On a 13-inch laptop screen you use at arm's length, 1080p and 1440p look very similar. On a 55-inch TV you watch from 10 feet away, 1080p and 4K are harder to distinguish than you might expect.
