How to Secure Your Home Wi-Fi Network

Protect your home network from hackers with these essential security steps.

    1

    Change the default password

    ~15s
Your router came with a default admin password (often "admin" or "password"). Log into your router (type 192.168.1.1 in a browser) and change both the admin password and Wi-Fi password to something strong.
    2

    Use WPA3 or WPA2 encryption

    ~15s
In your router settings, look for Security or Encryption type. Choose WPA3 if available, or WPA2-AES. Never use WEP — it's easily hackable. This encrypts all data on your network.
    3

    Create a strong Wi-Fi password

    ~15s
Use at least 12 characters mixing letters, numbers, and symbols. Don't use your address, name, or phone number. "PurpleDolphin$Fly92!" is much better than "Smith123."
    4

    Change the network name (SSID)

    ~15s
Don't use your name or address as the network name. "Home_Network_5G" reveals nothing useful to hackers. Avoid names that identify the router brand.
    5

    Enable your firewall

    ~15s
Most routers have a built-in firewall. Check your router settings to make sure it's turned on. This blocks unauthorized incoming connections from the internet.
    6

    Update router firmware

    ~15s
Router manufacturers release security updates. Log into your router settings and look for Firmware Update or check the manufacturer's app. Set up auto-updates if available.
    7

    Set up a guest network

    ~15s
Create a separate guest network for visitors. This keeps them off your main network where your personal devices and files are. Most modern routers offer this in settings.
