How to Connect a Soundbar to Your TV

A soundbar dramatically improves your TV's audio. Learn how to connect one with HDMI ARC, optical cable, or Bluetooth — and the best settings to use.

    1

Identify your TV's audio output ports

    ~24s
Look at the back or side of your TV for: - HDMI ARC port: labeled "HDMI ARC" or "HDMI eARC" — this is the best connection method - Optical audio port: a small square port (looks like an optical fiber connection), labeled "Digital Audio Out" or "Optical" - Bluetooth: no port needed Most TVs made after 2010 have at least one of these. Check which port your soundbar also supports.
    2

    Connect with HDMI ARC (recommended)

    ~28s
Plug one end of an HDMI cable into the port labeled "HDMI ARC" on your TV, and the other end into the "HDMI ARC" port on your soundbar. Power on both. Go to your TV's Settings > Audio > Audio Output and select "HDMI ARC" or "External speakers." Your TV remote volume buttons should now control the soundbar.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: HDMI ARC lets your TV remote control the soundbar volume — you won't need a second remote. This is a major convenience advantage over other connection methods.

    3

    Connect with optical cable

    ~19s
Plug the optical cable into the "Digital Audio Out (Optical)" port on your TV, and into the "Optical In" port on your soundbar. Remove the plastic protective tips from both ends of the cable before inserting. In your TV's Settings > Audio, set output to "Digital Audio Out (Optical)." Use the soundbar's remote to control volume.
    4

    Connect via Bluetooth

    ~17s
Put the soundbar in Bluetooth pairing mode (usually by holding the Bluetooth button until a light flashes). On your TV, go to Settings > Sound > Bluetooth Speaker List (or similar). Select your soundbar from the list. This is the most flexible option for furniture arrangements but may occasionally experience brief dropouts.
    5

Adjust soundbar settings for better dialogue

    ~17s
Many soundbars have a "Voice" or "Clear Voice" or "Dialogue" mode in their settings. Enable this to make spoken words clearer — especially helpful for news programs, dramas, and any content where understanding dialogue is important. Set the soundbar EQ to prioritize midrange frequencies where the human voice sits.

Modern flat TVs look great but often have poor sound — the speakers are thin and point away from you, making dialogue hard to hear, especially at lower volumes. A soundbar is a long, flat speaker that sits below your TV and delivers significantly richer, clearer audio. Dialogue becomes easier to understand, music sounds fuller, and the overall experience improves dramatically.

Soundbars connect to your TV in one of three ways: HDMI ARC (best quality, one cable does audio and control), optical digital cable (also good), or Bluetooth (wireless, most flexible but slightly less reliable). This guide covers all three methods so you can use whichever port your TV has.
