Telehealth services like Teladoc let you see a licensed doctor or therapist by video call on your phone or computer, without driving to a clinic or sitting in a waiting room. This is especially helpful for common, non-emergency conditions like colds, sinus infections, rashes, urinary tract infections, allergies, and general medical questions.
Teladoc is one of the largest telehealth companies in the United States. Many employers and health insurance plans include Teladoc as a free or low-cost benefit — some plans charge $0 for a telehealth visit. Without insurance, a typical visit costs around $75–$99.
The way it works is straightforward. You create an account, choose the type of visit you need (general medicine, mental health, dermatology, etc.), and request an appointment. For general medical care, you can often get a visit within an hour. For specialty care, you may need to schedule in advance.
During the visit, a doctor or nurse practitioner will review your medical history, ask about your symptoms, and may be able to prescribe medication if appropriate. At the end of the appointment, a visit summary is sent to your email, and you can request that a summary be sent to your regular doctor.
Similar services to Teladoc include MDLive, Amwell, Doctor on Demand, and Amazon Clinic. Many insurance apps also have a built-in telehealth option.
Quick Tip: Telehealth works best in a quiet, well-lit room. Find a spot where you can speak privately and where your face is clearly visible in good light. Natural light from a window in front of you works well.
Important disclaimer: This guide is for informational purposes only. Telehealth is not appropriate for all medical situations. If you are experiencing a medical emergency, chest pain, difficulty breathing, or signs of a stroke, call 911 immediately. Always consult with a qualified medical professional for diagnosis and treatment.
