    How to Transfer a Prescription to a New Pharmacy

    Move your prescription from one pharmacy to another — usually you just need to call the new pharmacy and they handle it.

    Gather your prescription info

    Pick up your current pill bottle and look at the label. You need the prescription number (usually called "Rx Number"), the drug name and dose, and the name of your current pharmacy.

    Call or visit the new pharmacy

    Call the new pharmacy or walk in during business hours. Tell them you want to transfer a prescription and give them the Rx number, drug name, and the phone number of your old pharmacy.

    Wait for them to contact the old pharmacy

    The new pharmacy calls or faxes your old pharmacy directly to get your prescription details. This usually takes 1 to 3 hours. They will text or call you when it is ready.

    Pick up the prescription

    Go to the new pharmacy, give your name at the counter, and pick up your medication. Pay with insurance or cash, just like before.

    Update auto-refills and apps

    If you used the old pharmacy's app or auto-refills, cancel those. Then set up auto-refills at the new pharmacy so you do not run out of medication.
