    1

Open Trulia and search for a location

    ~24s
Go to trulia.com in your web browser or download the Trulia app from the App Store or Google Play. Enter a city, neighborhood, or zip code in the search bar. You can search for homes for sale, homes for rent, or just browse neighborhoods on the map without looking at specific listings. Creating a free Trulia account lets you save homes and searches, but browsing does not require an account.
    2

Open a listing and explore the neighborhood layers

    ~31s
Click or tap on a home listing that interests you. Scroll past the photos and home details until you reach the map section. Look for layer options labeled "Crime," "Schools," "Commute," "Flood," and "Noise." Tap each one to toggle that information overlay on the map. This shows you the neighborhood characteristics around that specific home, not just the home itself.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: Crime data on Trulia comes from local police reports and may not be perfectly complete or current. Use it as one data point among many, not as a final judgment.

    3

    Use the crime map overlay

    ~24s
Tap the "Crime" layer on the neighborhood map. Colored dots or heat zones will appear showing where crimes have been reported in the area over the past year. You can filter by crime type — property crimes like theft and burglary are separate from violent crimes. Zoom in and out on the map to see crime patterns in the surrounding blocks and compare the specific home's immediate location to nearby areas.
    4

    Check school ratings

    ~21s
Tap the "Schools" layer to see nearby public and private schools marked on the map. Each school shows a GreatSchools rating from 1 to 10. Tap any school icon to see a summary including the rating, enrollment size, and grade levels. Even if you do not have children, school district quality tends to affect home values, so it is relevant information for most buyers.
    5

    Calculate your commute time

    ~23s
Look for the "Commute" section on the listing page or tap the commute layer on the map. Enter your workplace address and select your transportation method — driving, public transit, or biking. Trulia will show the estimated travel time from that home to your workplace. You can add multiple destinations if you need to check commute times to more than one location, like work and a family member's home.
    6

Save your search for email alerts

    ~31s
After you set your filters for price, bedrooms, and area, click "Save Search" or tap the save option in the app. Trulia will email you when new listings appear that match your criteria. You can set how often you receive these alerts — immediately, daily, or weekly. This keeps you informed without needing to check the website every day during your home search.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: You can save multiple searches in Trulia — for example, one for each neighborhood you are considering. This lets you compare how frequently new listings appear in different areas.

Trulia is a home search website and app owned by Zillow Group, but it has developed a reputation for its especially detailed neighborhood information. While you can certainly search for homes on Trulia, what makes it stand out is the depth of data it provides about the areas surrounding those homes.

Before you buy a house, you want to know more than just the price and number of bedrooms. You want to know: Is the neighborhood safe? Are the nearby schools good? How long would my commute be? What stores and restaurants are nearby? Will I be bothered by traffic noise or a busy highway? Trulia tries to answer all of these questions on a single listing page.

The crime map overlay on Trulia lets you see reported crime incidents in the area plotted on a map. This is not a judgment about any neighborhood — it is information to help you understand the area realistically. The map color-codes different types of crime (property crime, violent crime, etc.) so you can see the breakdown.

School ratings show nearby public and private schools with scores from GreatSchools.org. You can tap on any school to see more detail, including test score data and parent reviews.

The commute time calculator lets you enter your workplace address and see how long the drive or transit ride would take from any home on Trulia. This is invaluable if you are considering a home that is farther from work — you want to know the real commute cost in time before committing.

Trulia also shows a Noise Score for listings, indicating whether the area has elevated levels of traffic, airport, or other environmental noise.
