How to Turn Your PC On and Off

Learn the proper way to start up and shut down your Windows PC to keep it running smoothly.

    1

    Locate the power button

    ~15s
Find the power button on your PC tower or laptop — it usually has a circle with a line through the top.
    2

    Press to turn on

    ~15s
Press the power button once and release. Wait for the Windows logo and login screen to appear.
    3

    Log in to Windows

    ~15s
Enter your PIN, password, or use Windows Hello (fingerprint/face) to sign in.

    Quick Tip

Set up Windows Hello (fingerprint or face) for the fastest login — you'll never type a password again!

    4

    Shut down properly

    ~15s
Click the Start menu (Windows icon) → PowerShut Down. Never hold the power button unless the PC is frozen.

    Warning

Never hold the power button to force shutdown unless your PC is completely frozen. This can cause data loss.

    5

    Use Sleep mode for breaks

    ~15s
For short breaks, use StartPowerSleep. Your PC will resume quickly when you press the power button again.

    Quick Tip

Sleep mode uses very little power and lets you resume in seconds. Use it for lunch breaks or short pauses.
