How to Set Up Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

Add an extra layer of security to your most important accounts in just a few minutes.

    1

    What is 2FA?

    ~15s
Two-factor authentication requires two things to log in: your password PLUS a second verification (usually a code sent to your phone). Even if someone steals your password, they can't access your account without your phone.
    2

    Which accounts to protect first

    ~15s
Start with: email (it's the master key to all other accounts), banking and financial sites, social media, shopping accounts with saved credit cards, and cloud storage.
    3

    Set up 2FA on Google/Gmail

    ~15s
Go to myaccount.google.com > Security > 2-Step Verification > Get Started. Google can send prompts to your phone, text codes, or use an authenticator app. Choose what's easiest for you.
    4

Set up 2FA on Apple ID

    ~15s
iPhone: Settings > your name > Sign-In & Security > Two-Factor Authentication. Apple sends a code to your trusted devices. This protects your entire Apple account.
    5

    Set up 2FA on Facebook

    ~15s
Settings > Security and Login > Two-Factor Authentication. Choose text message codes or an authenticator app. Facebook also offers recovery codes — save these somewhere safe.
    6

    Authenticator apps

    ~15s
More secure than text messages: Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, or Authy. They generate codes that refresh every 30 seconds. Free and work with most services.
    7

    Save your backup codes

    ~15s
Most services give you backup codes when you set up 2FA. Print these or write them down and store safely. They let you log in if you lose your phone.
