How to Upload a Video to YouTube From Your Phone or Computer

Share home videos on YouTube with the right privacy setting so only the people you choose can see them. Step-by-step for phone and computer.

On your phone, open the YouTube app and tap your profile picture (or the person icon) in the top-right corner. Sign in with your Google account. On a computer, go to youtube.com and click "Sign in" in the top-right corner. Use your Gmail address and password.

Start the upload

On phone: Tap the plus (+) button at the bottom of the YouTube screen, then select "Upload a video." Your phone's video library will open — tap the video you want to upload. On computer: Click the video camera icon with a plus sign near the top-right of YouTube, then click "Upload video." A window opens where you can drag in your video file or click "Select files" to browse for it.

Add a title and description

Give your video a title that describes what it is — for example "Thanksgiving Dinner 2025" or "Jake's First Birthday." A description is optional but helpful. Keep the title under 100 characters. You don't need a detailed description for personal videos — a simple one-sentence note is fine.

Set the privacy level before publishing

This step is critical. Before you finish uploading, find the "Visibility" or "Privacy" setting. Choose one of these three options: "Unlisted" (recommended for family videos — only people with the link can see it), "Private" (only specific Google accounts you invite can see it), or "Public" (anyone can find and watch it). For most personal videos, choose Unlisted.

Warning

If you leave the setting on "Public" by accident, anyone searching YouTube could find your video. Double-check this before clicking Publish or Upload.

Publish the video and wait for processing

Tap "Upload" or "Publish" to start the upload. A progress bar shows the upload status. After uploading finishes, YouTube processes the video (this converts it to the right format for streaming) — this usually takes 2–5 minutes for a short video, longer for longer videos. You'll get a notification when it's ready to watch.

Share the link with family or friends

Once your video is processed, go to the video on YouTube and look for the "Share" button (it looks like an arrow). Copy the link and paste it into a text message, email, or messaging app to share with the people you want to see it. Anyone with that link can watch the video (if it's Unlisted) without needing a YouTube account.

To find your videos later, tap your profile picture in YouTube and go to "Your channel" or "Your videos." All your uploaded videos are listed there.

Millions of regular people use it to share home videos with family, save personal memories, or upload videos that would otherwise take up storage space on their phone. The key is understanding YouTube's privacy settings so you control exactly who can see your video.

YouTube offers three privacy options for every video you upload. Public means anyone on the internet can find and watch it. Unlisted means only people who have the direct link can watch it. It won't appear in YouTube searches or on your channel page. Private means only specific people you invite can watch it.

For home videos and personal memories, Unlisted is usually the best choice. You upload the video, then share the link with family and friends via text or email. They can watch it without needing a YouTube account. No one else can find it.

To upload a video to YouTube, you need a free Google account (a Gmail address works). The YouTube app is free on iPhone and Android. And you can also upload from YouTube.com on a computer.

File size and length limits are generous for standard accounts — videos can be up to 15 minutes long and up to 256 GB in size. For most home videos, you'll never hit these limits. Longer upload limits (up to 12 hours) are available if you verify your account with a phone number.

Upload speeds depend on your internet connection. A 5-minute video might take 2–10 minutes to upload on a typical home WiFi connection. YouTube then processes the video after upload, which takes a few extra minutes before it's viewable.

Keep in mind that YouTube is owned by Google. The videos you upload are stored on Google's servers. For very personal content you never want online, consider keeping it on a local hard drive or USB drive instead.
