USB Types Explained: Which Cable Do You Need?

Understand USB-A, USB-C, Micro-USB, and Lightning cables so you always grab the right one.

    1

    USB-A (the classic rectangle)

    ~15s
The flat, rectangular plug found on most computers. Only fits one way (you always try the wrong way first). Still common on computers, chargers, and external drives. Being gradually replaced by USB-C.
    2

    USB-C (the new standard)

    ~15s
Small, oval, reversible (fits either way). Used by most new Android phones, iPads, MacBooks, and now iPhones (15 and newer). Can carry power, data, and video through one cable. This is the future.
    3

    Micro-USB (the old small one)

    ~15s
Smaller than USB-A, trapezoidal shape. Was standard on Android phones and tablets for years. Being phased out in favor of USB-C. You may still have devices that use it.
    4

    Lightning (Apple)

    ~15s
Apple's proprietary connector used on iPhone 5 through iPhone 14, older iPads, and AirPods. Small and reversible. iPhone 15+ switched to USB-C. Still found on many Apple accessories.

    Buying tips

    ~15s
Buy USB-C cables for new devices. Look for "USB-IF Certified" for quality. Don't buy the cheapest cables — poor quality cables can damage devices or charge slowly. Anker, Apple, and Samsung make reliable cables.
