Your phone can track your daily steps, walking distance, and other activity without any extra devices — using its built-in motion sensors. Apple Health (iPhone) and Google Fit (Android) are free apps that collect this data and present it in an easy-to-understand dashboard.
Apple Health comes pre-installed on every iPhone (white icon with a red heart). Open it and you will see a Summary dashboard showing your recent activity. The app automatically tracks your steps and walking distance using your phone's motion sensors — you do not need to turn anything on. You can also manually log other health data like weight, blood pressure, sleep, and medications.
Google Fit is available on Android (download from Play Store if not pre-installed). Open it, sign in with your Google account, and set your activity goals. Like Apple Health, it automatically tracks steps and active minutes using your phone's sensors.
Both apps can connect to third-party health devices. If you have a fitness tracker, smart scale, blood pressure monitor, or sleep tracker, check if it connects to Apple Health or Google Fit. Go to the app's settings and look for "Connected Apps" or "Connected Devices."
Set a daily step goal to stay motivated. Health organizations recommend 7,000-10,000 steps per day, but any increase from your current level is beneficial. The apps show your progress throughout the day.
Your health data is private and stored on your device. You control who can see it and which apps can access it. You can also share specific health data with family members or your doctor if you choose.
