The app works on iPhone and Android and doesn't need an account. Download it from the App Store or Google Play. Search for "FEMA" and look for the app published by the Department of Homeland Security.

When you first open the app, allow notifications and location access. Notifications deliver emergency alerts, and your location makes sure the alerts match your area. You can set alerts for up to five locations, including your home, workplace, and family members' cities.

The app sends real-time alerts for severe weather, floods, earthquakes, hurricanes, and other emergencies. During a disaster, the shelter finder shows nearby open shelters on a map with addresses and services offered.
