Your phone can act as a portable WiFi hotspot, sharing its cellular data connection with your laptop, tablet, or other devices. This is useful when you are somewhere without WiFi — a hotel without internet, a waiting room, or while traveling.
On iPhone: go to Settings → Personal Hotspot → toggle on "Allow Others to Join." Note the WiFi password shown on the screen. On your laptop or tablet, look for your iPhone's name in the WiFi network list and connect using that password.
On Android: go to Settings → Network & Internet (or Connections) → Hotspot & Tethering → WiFi Hotspot → turn it on. Note the network name and password. Connect your other device to this network.
Important: hotspot uses your cellular data. If you have a limited data plan, streaming video, downloading files, or extended use can consume your data allowance quickly. Check your plan's hotspot data allowance — some carriers include it for free, others charge extra, and some throttle speeds after a certain amount.
Tips for conserving data while using hotspot: avoid streaming video (it uses the most data), turn off automatic app updates and cloud backups on connected devices, and close unnecessary browser tabs and apps.
If you use hotspot frequently, consider an unlimited data plan that includes hotspot, or a separate mobile hotspot device (available from all major carriers). These devices often provide better speeds and battery life than using your phone.
