AAA (American Automobile Association) is a membership organization best known for roadside assistance. If your car breaks down, has a flat tire, needs a battery jump, or you lock your keys inside, AAA sends help.
The AAA mobile app makes requesting help much faster and more accurate than calling. Instead of describing your location over the phone, the app uses your GPS to share your exact position with the tow truck driver. You can also see your driver's estimated arrival time and track them on a map.
The app also gives you access to your digital AAA membership card, travel discounts, gas station prices, and AAA's roadside network of approved repair shops.
AAA memberships start around $60 to $80 per year and include a set number of roadside service calls. Classic membership typically covers four service calls per year. Higher tiers include longer towing distance and additional benefits.
Even if you have a newer car with roadside assistance included, having AAA is useful as a backup — car manufacturer programs often expire or have coverage gaps. Many insurance policies also offer roadside assistance add-ons, but AAA is generally considered the fastest and most reliable network.
For older adults who drive, having the AAA app set up on your phone before you need it is strongly recommended. Searching for the app while stranded on the side of the road is stressful and avoidable.
