How to Use Instagram: A Complete Beginner's Guide

Learn to set up Instagram, post photos, follow friends, and browse safely — no experience needed.

    1

    Download and create your account

    ~18s
Open the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play Store (Android) and search for "Instagram." Tap Install, then open the app. Tap "Create New Account," enter your email or phone number, choose a username (your display name), and set a password. You can also sign up with your Facebook account if you have one.
    2

    Set up your profile

    ~21s
Tap the person icon (bottom right) to go to your profile. Tap "Edit Profile" to add a profile photo (tap the circle and choose from your camera or photo library) and a short bio — something like "Retired teacher. Love gardening and grandkids!" This helps friends recognize you.

    Quick Tip

Use a clear, recent photo of yourself so friends and family can find you easily.

    3

    Find and follow people

    ~17s
Tap the magnifying glass icon (bottom bar) to search. Type a friend's name or username. Tap their profile, then tap the blue "Follow" button. You'll see their posts in your home feed. Instagram may also suggest people from your contacts — tap "Allow" when prompted to find friends already on Instagram.
    4

    Browse your feed

    ~16s
Tap the house icon (bottom left) to see your home feed — posts from people you follow. Scroll up and down to see more. Tap the heart icon below a photo to like it. Tap the speech bubble to leave a comment. Double-tap a photo for a quick like.
    5

    Post your first photo

    ~24s
Tap the + icon (bottom center). Choose a photo from your library or tap "Camera" to take one now. Add a filter if you like (swipe left/right to preview filters — "Clarendon" is popular). Write a caption describing your photo. Tap "Share" to post it. Your followers will see it in their feeds!

    Quick Tip

You can tag people in your photo by tapping "Tag People" and tapping on a face in the image.

    6

    Stay safe on Instagram

    ~22s
Go to Settings (tap your profile → hamburger menu ☰ → Settings and Privacy). Set your account to "Private" so only approved followers see your posts. Turn off "Activity Status" so strangers can't see when you're online. Never share your home address, phone number, or financial details in posts or messages.

    Warning

Be cautious of direct messages from strangers — scammers use Instagram to impersonate friends or offer fake prizes.
