How to Use Uber & Lyft: Book a Ride Step by Step

Download and set up the app

Search "Uber" or "Lyft" in your app store and install it. Open the app and create an account with your phone number and email. You'll need to add a payment method — a credit card, debit card, or link your PayPal. Both apps will ask for location permission — tap "Allow While Using" so they can find nearby drivers.

Enter your destination

Tap "Where to?" (Uber) or "Where are you going?" (Lyft). Type the address, business name, or choose from saved locations like Home or Work. The app will show your current location as the pickup point — you can adjust this by dragging the pin on the map.

Choose your ride type

After entering your destination, you'll see ride options: UberX/Lyft (standard, 1-4 passengers), UberXL/Lyft XL (larger vehicle, up to 6), Comfort (nicer car, more legroom). Each shows an estimated price and arrival time. Tap your preferred option, then tap "Confirm" or "Request."

Quick Tip

Prices go up during busy times ("surge pricing"). If the price seems high, wait 10-15 minutes and check again.

Meet your driver

Once confirmed, you'll see your driver's name, photo, car make/model, color, and license plate number. A map shows the car moving toward you in real-time. When the driver arrives, verify the license plate matches before getting in. Some drivers will confirm your name.

Warning

Never get in a car without verifying the license plate and driver name. If something feels wrong, cancel the ride.

During and after the ride

The app shows your route on the map during the ride. You can share your trip with a family member by tapping "Share trip status" — they'll see your live location. When you arrive, the payment is automatic — no cash needed. Rate your driver 1-5 stars and add a tip if you'd like.
