How to Use Google Maps: Navigation, Directions & Local Search

Never get lost again — learn to search for places, get turn-by-turn directions, and explore your neighborhood.

    1

    Open Google Maps

    ~15s
Google Maps comes pre-installed on most Android phones. On iPhone, download it from the App Store. Open the app and allow location access when prompted. You'll see a map centered on your current location (the blue dot).
    2

    Search for a place

    ~15s
Tap the search bar at the top and type a business name, address, or category (like "pharmacy near me" or "Italian restaurants"). Tap a result to see its location on the map, plus hours, phone number, reviews, and photos. Tap "Directions" to get there.
    3

    Get turn-by-turn directions

    ~21s
After tapping "Directions," choose your travel method: driving (car icon), transit (bus icon), walking (person icon), or rideshare. Tap "Start" to begin navigation. The app will give you voice instructions like "Turn left in 200 feet." Keep your phone mounted where you can see the screen safely.

    Quick Tip

Tap the speaker icon to adjust voice volume. You can mute directions if you prefer just watching the map.

    4

    Save favorite places

    ~15s
Search for a place, then tap "Save." Choose a list like "Favorites," "Want to go," or create your own (like "Doctor's offices"). Saved places appear with a colored pin on your map and are easy to find later under the "Saved" tab at the bottom.
    5

    Download maps for offline use

    ~21s
Going somewhere with spotty cell service? Tap your profile icon → "Offline maps" → "Select your own map." Pinch and zoom to frame the area you need, then tap "Download." The map data will be saved to your phone so you can navigate even without internet.

    Quick Tip

Downloaded maps expire after about 30 days. The app will remind you to update them.
