Planning a vacation used to mean a stack of guidebooks, a yellow highlighter, and hours on TripAdvisor. AI assistants can produce a reasonable first-draft itinerary in minutes, leaving the richer work of verifying and personalizing for you. The pattern that works best: ask the AI for structure, then verify the specifics yourself before booking anything.
The ingredients of a strong trip prompt are destination, travel dates, group size and ages, interests (museums, hiking, food, architecture, history, nightlife), travel style (budget, mid-range, luxury), and pace (relaxed with long dinners, packed full of activities). Mention any limitations — limited mobility, kids' attention spans, dietary restrictions. The more you share, the better the output.
Example: "Plan a 5-day trip to Rome for a couple in their 60s, moderate walking pace. We love Italian food, history, and art but not crowds. Mid-range budget for hotels. Two nice dinners and three simpler meals per day. Include which neighborhood to stay in."
AI will return a day-by-day itinerary with morning, afternoon, and evening activities, usually with approximate walking times. Ask it to group activities that are near each other geographically — the common flaw in AI itineraries is sending you across town for lunch and back again. Ask for restaurant suggestions that fit dietary needs.
Now the important part: AI hallucinations. AI can confidently invent restaurants that don't exist, list closed museums, or quote incorrect hours. Always verify specific names and addresses on Google Maps or the venue's official website before counting on them. Use the AI for the shape of the trip; use official sources for the bookings.
