AirDrop is Apple's wireless file-sharing feature that works between iPhones, iPads, and Macs over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. It is the fastest way to share a photo, document, or link between Apple devices — typically transferring files in seconds with no internet required.
What AirDrop can share
: Photos, videos, PDFs, links, contacts, audio files, documents, app files, and almost any other type of content on your Apple device.
How it works
: Both devices need Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on (even though they do not need to be on the same Wi-Fi network). AirDrop creates a direct peer-to-peer connection between the devices. Files transfer without going through the internet.
Privacy settings
: - Contacts Only: Only people in your contacts list can send you AirDrop files - Everyone for 10 Minutes: Anyone nearby can send you a file for a limited window (good for a single exchange) - Off: AirDrop completely disabled
For most people, "Contacts Only" is the right default setting — it prevents strangers from sending you unwanted content while still allowing easy sharing with family and friends.
AirDrop works when both devices are within about 30 feet of each other. If AirDrop is not appearing as an option, check that both devices have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled and that AirDrop is not set to "Off."
