    1

    Download your airline's app

    ~25s
Go to the App Store (iPhone) or Play Store (Android) and search for your airline's name — for example, "Delta" or "American Airlines." Download the official app (it is free). Sign in with your frequent flyer account, or look up your reservation using your last name and booking confirmation number.

    Quick Tip

Download the app at least a day before your flight so you have time to get familiar with it. Do not wait until you are at the airport.

    2

    Find your upcoming flight

    ~16s
After logging in, your upcoming trips should appear on the home screen. If not, tap "My Trips" and enter your last name and booking confirmation number (you can find this in your original booking confirmation email). Your flight details will appear, including the date, time, origin, and destination.
    3

    Check in online

    ~29s
Check-in opens 24 hours before your scheduled departure. When you are ready, tap "Check In" next to your flight. The app may ask you to confirm your seat, add a bag (for a fee if you have not already paid for checked luggage), and review your passenger information. Follow the prompts until you see a "Check In" confirmation.

    Warning

If you are checking a bag, you still need to drop it at the airline's bag drop counter at the airport. The mobile boarding pass only covers your own body — not your checked luggage.

    Get your boarding pass

    ~19s
After checking in, your boarding pass will appear on screen as a barcode or QR code. Tap "Add to Wallet" (on iPhone) or "Add to Google Wallet" (on Android) to save it to your phone's digital wallet. This makes it easy to access even without opening the airline app. You can also screenshot it as a backup.
    5

Track your flight and stay updated

    ~19s
The app shows real-time information about your flight — gate number, on-time status, and any delays or changes. Turn on notifications in your phone settings for the airline app so you get alerts automatically. If your gate changes or your flight is delayed, you will find out right away without having to watch the airport monitors.

Most major airlines now have free apps that let you manage almost everything about your trip from your phone. You can check in for your flight, get a digital boarding pass, pick your seat, track your flight status, and receive gate change alerts — all without printing anything or standing in line.

Check-in through the app typically opens 24 hours before your flight's departure time. You will get a notification from the app reminding you to check in. Once you check in, your boarding pass appears right in the app. You can screenshot it, add it to your phone's wallet (Apple Wallet or Google Wallet), or show the app directly at the gate.

Major US airlines with well-designed apps include American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, Southwest Airlines, and Alaska Airlines. The process is similar across all of them.

Using a mobile boarding pass is accepted at most US airports and TSA checkpoints. The TSA officer and gate agent will scan the barcode on your phone's screen, just like a printed boarding pass. Make sure your phone's screen brightness is turned up so the barcode scans easily.

Some airports and international flights still require a printed boarding pass, so check your airline's website or app if you are unsure. For domestic US flights at major airports, a mobile boarding pass works reliably.

You will need your booking confirmation number or the email address you used when you bought the ticket to log in to the airline's app the first time.
