Practical Alexa Tips for Controlling Your Smart Home

Thermostat commands

Lock commands

For smart door locks, Alexa can check if a door is locked or lock it, but will NOT unlock a door by voice for security reasons — you'd have to use the app for that. Try: - "Alexa, lock the front door." - "Alexa, is the front door locked?"

Warning

Never name your lock something obvious like "Front Door Unlock" — use the app or keypad for unlocking. Alexa is for locking only, by default.

Set up a Routine for multiple actions

A Routine lets one command (or scheduled time) trigger several actions. To set one up: open the Alexa app on your phone, tap "More" at the bottom right, then tap "Routines," then the "+" button. Name the routine, set the trigger (a phrase you'll say, like "Alexa, good night"), then tap "Add action" to add things like "Turn off all lights," "Lock the front door," and "Set thermostat to 68 degrees." Save it. Now saying "Alexa, good night" does all of that at once.

Quick Tip

You can also set Routines to trigger automatically at a certain time — for example, "every morning at 7 AM, turn on the kitchen light and read me the weather."
