The Amazon Echo Dot is a small hockey puck-shaped speaker that runs Amazon's Alexa voice assistant. Once plugged in and set up, you can talk to Alexa to check the weather, play music, set timers, control smart lights, hear the news, make calls, and get answers to questions — all without touching any screen.
The Echo Dot requires a Wi-Fi connection and a free Amazon account to work. If you shop on Amazon, you already have an account you can use. Setup is done through the free Alexa app on your phone and takes about 10 minutes.
Once set up, you wake Alexa by saying "Alexa" — a blue ring lights up on the device and it listens for your command. You do not need to press any buttons for everyday use.
The Echo Dot is small and inexpensive (around $30-50 depending on the model and sales). It fits on a bedside table, kitchen counter, or living room shelf. The speaker quality is good enough for music, podcasts, and voice interaction in a medium-sized room.
Some of the most popular uses for seniors: setting medication reminders, asking about weather before leaving the house, making hands-free phone calls, hearing news updates, and controlling smart home devices like lights and thermostats.
The Echo Dot does not have a screen. If you want a device with a screen for video calls or viewing recipes, consider the Echo Show instead. But for voice-only tasks, the Echo Dot does everything at a lower price.
