Why Your Android Phone Drains Battery Even When Apps Are Restricted

You restricted background activity but your battery still drains. Here's why — and the settings that actually stop it.

    1

Check which apps are using the most battery

    ~20s
Go to SettingsBatteryBattery Usage (the path may vary slightly by phone brand). You will see a list of apps ranked by how much battery they have used in the past day. Look for apps at the top of the list that you do not use often — those are the culprits.
    2

Restrict background activity for each culprit app

    ~27s
Go to SettingsApps → tap the problem app → Battery. Set it to "Restricted." This stops the app from running in the background when you are not actively using it. On Samsung phones, this setting may be called "Background usage limits." On Pixel phones: SettingsApps → [App Name] → BatteryRestricted.

    Warning

Do not restrict messaging apps like WhatsApp or Messages — restricting them will stop you from receiving messages when the app is not open.

    3

Turn off Background App Optimization for the worst offenders

    ~15s
Go to SettingsBatteryBackground App Optimization (available on Android 15). Turn it off for apps that continue draining battery even after being restricted. This is a stronger restriction than the Battery setting alone.
    4

For Samsung phones: use Deep Sleep mode

    ~23s
Samsung has an extra aggressive battery saving option. Go to SettingsDevice CareBatteryBackground Usage Limits. Add the worst offending apps to "Sleeping apps" or "Deep sleeping apps." Deep sleeping apps consume almost no battery when not in use.

    Quick Tip

Search your phone model plus "battery optimization tips" on Google for model-specific advice, as Samsung, Motorola, Xiaomi, and OnePlus all have different battery management systems.

Even with background restrictions enabled, some Android apps continue draining battery through push notifications, system-level permissions, and manufacturer-specific wake locks. To dig deeper: go to Settings > Battery > Battery Usage and look for apps consuming power disproportionately. For each culprit, go to Settings > Apps > [App Name] > Battery and set it to "Restricted." Also check Settings > Battery > Background App Optimization. Some manufacturers (Samsung, Xiaomi) have aggressive battery management — search for your phone model plus "battery optimization" for model-specific steps.
