How to Block Spam and Nuisance Calls on iPhone

Tired of constant spam calls? Here are several ways to block unwanted callers and reduce nuisance calls on your iPhone.

    1

    Turn on Silence Unknown Callers

    ~20s
Go to Settings > Phone > Silence Unknown Callers and turn it on. Calls from numbers not saved in your contacts will be automatically silenced and sent to voicemail. You will still see missed calls from unknown numbers in your Recents list.

    Quick Tip

Apple's guide on managing calls is at support.apple.com/en-us/111106 — it covers blocking, filtering, and silencing options on iPhone.

    2

    Block a specific number

    ~19s
Open the Phone app and tap "Recents." Find the number you want to block and tap the (i) icon next to it. Scroll down and tap "Block this Caller." Future calls, texts, and FaceTime from that number will be blocked automatically.

    Quick Tip

You can view and manage your blocked numbers by going to Settings > Phone > Blocked Contacts.

    3

    Report spam calls

    ~15s
In the Phone app, tap "Recents" and tap the (i) icon next to a spam number. Scroll down and tap "Report as Junk." Apple uses this information to improve spam detection for all iPhone users.
    4

Register on the National Do Not Call Registry

    ~23s
Visit DoNotCall.gov or call 1-888-382-1222 to add your phone number to the National Do Not Call Registry. Most legitimate companies are legally required to stop calling you within 31 days of registration. It is free and takes less than a minute.

    Quick Tip

Registration lasts permanently. If you still get calls after 31 days, those are likely scammers (who do not follow the law) — report them at DoNotCall.gov.

    5

    Install a free call-blocking app

    ~22s
Download a free spam-blocking app like Hiya or Nomorobo from the App Store. Once installed, go to Settings > Phone > Call Blocking & Identification and turn on the app. It will automatically identify spam callers before you even answer.

    Warning

No app or setting can block every spam call. Scammers constantly change numbers. Silence Unknown Callers (step 1) combined with a blocking app gives you the best protection.
