    1

Charge the tablet fully before starting setup

    ~20s
Connect the included USB-C charging cable to the tablet and plug the other end into the wall adapter. The screen will show a charging symbol. Let it charge to 100 percent before beginning setup — setup can take 20 to 30 minutes and you do not want the battery to die in the middle of it.
    2

Power on and connect to Wi-Fi

    ~24s
Press and hold the power button on the side of the tablet for two to three seconds. The screen will light up and show the setup screen. Choose your language, then select your home Wi-Fi network from the list and type in your Wi-Fi password.

    Quick Tip

Your Wi-Fi password is often printed on a sticker on the back or bottom of your home router — the box your internet comes from.

    3

Sign in with your Google account

    ~27s
When prompted, enter the email address and password for your Google (Gmail) account. If you do not have one, tap Create account and follow the steps. A Google account is free and takes about five minutes to create. Once signed in, the tablet connects to your Google services automatically.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: Write down your Google account email and password somewhere safe at home as soon as you create them. You will need them again if you ever have to reset the tablet.

    4

Download apps from the Google Play Store

    ~25s
Find the Google Play Store app on the home screen (it has a colorful triangle icon). Tap it to open. Use the search bar to find apps by name — for example, "Zoom," "Netflix," or "Facebook Messenger." Tap the app, then tap Install. Free apps download immediately with no charge.

    Warning

Only download apps from the Google Play Store. Avoid downloading apps from websites or links sent in messages — these can sometimes contain harmful software.

    5

Adjust text size and display settings

    ~26s
Go to Settings (tap the gear icon from the home screen). Tap Display, then Font Size and Style. Use the slider to increase the text size to a comfortable level. You can also adjust the screen brightness here. For accessibility features like larger touch targets, go to Settings and look for Accessibility.

    Quick Tip

Samsung tablets have a feature called "One-Handed Mode" and also a "Magnifier" under Accessibility — both can be helpful if you find the screen gestures difficult.

Android tablets — like the Samsung Galaxy Tab series — are popular, affordable devices that are great for browsing the web, video calling family, watching TV shows, reading, and playing games. Samsung is the most well-known brand, but other brands like Lenovo and TCL make Android tablets as well, and they all work in a similar way.

The larger screen of a tablet (typically 8 to 11 inches) makes everything easier to see and tap compared to a phone. Text is bigger, photos are more vibrant, and video calls feel more natural when you can see the person you are talking to at a larger size. Many people find tablets easier to use than phones for this reason.

Setting up an Android tablet requires a Google account — which is the same as a Gmail email address. If you already have Gmail, you are set. If not, creating a free Google account takes about five minutes and gives you access to Gmail, the Google Play Store (where apps come from), Google Maps, YouTube, and many other free services all at once.

Unlike Amazon Fire tablets (which use Amazon's app store), Android tablets use the Google Play Store, which has over three million apps — including all the major ones like Netflix, Facebook, Zoom, YouTube, and more. If an app exists for phones, it almost certainly works on an Android tablet too.

Battery life on most Android tablets is 8 to 12 hours of regular use. The charging cable is typically USB-C on modern models. One helpful practice: charge it overnight so it is always ready during the day.
