Android tablets — like the Samsung Galaxy Tab series — are popular, affordable devices that are great for browsing the web, video calling family, watching TV shows, reading, and playing games. Samsung is the most well-known brand, but other brands like Lenovo and TCL make Android tablets as well, and they all work in a similar way.
The larger screen of a tablet (typically 8 to 11 inches) makes everything easier to see and tap compared to a phone. Text is bigger, photos are more vibrant, and video calls feel more natural when you can see the person you are talking to at a larger size. Many people find tablets easier to use than phones for this reason.
Setting up an Android tablet requires a Google account — which is the same as a Gmail email address. If you already have Gmail, you are set. If not, creating a free Google account takes about five minutes and gives you access to Gmail, the Google Play Store (where apps come from), Google Maps, YouTube, and many other free services all at once.
Unlike Amazon Fire tablets (which use Amazon's app store), Android tablets use the Google Play Store, which has over three million apps — including all the major ones like Netflix, Facebook, Zoom, YouTube, and more. If an app exists for phones, it almost certainly works on an Android tablet too.
Battery life on most Android tablets is 8 to 12 hours of regular use. The charging cable is typically USB-C on modern models. One helpful practice: charge it overnight so it is always ready during the day.
