Google Chromecast is a small device that plugs into the HDMI port on the back or side of your TV and connects to your home Wi-Fi. Once it's set up, you can send — or "cast" — video from your phone, tablet, or computer directly to your TV screen.
There are currently two main versions. The original Chromecast (and older models) requires you to use your phone as the remote — you open an app like YouTube or Netflix on your phone and tap the cast icon to send it to the TV. The newer Chromecast with Google TV comes with a physical remote, has its own full interface for browsing apps, and works more like a traditional streaming stick (similar to a Roku or Fire Stick).
To set up either version, start by plugging the Chromecast into your TV's HDMI port. If the power adapter doesn't reach an outlet, use the included USB cable to power it from the TV's USB port instead (though a wall outlet gives more reliable power). Switch your TV's input to the correct HDMI channel — the same way you'd switch to a game console or DVD player.
Next, download the Google Home app on your iPhone or Android phone. Open the app, tap the + icon, and select Set Up Device. Follow the prompts: the app will find the Chromecast, display a code on your TV to confirm it's the right device, connect it to your Wi-Fi, and give it a name like "Living Room TV."
For the original Chromecast, casting is done from within apps. Open Netflix, YouTube, Hulu, HBO Max, Disney+, or Spotify on your phone, then look for the cast icon — it looks like a rectangle with Wi-Fi waves in the corner. Tap it, select your Chromecast, and the video moves to the TV. Your phone acts as the remote: press pause on your phone and the TV pauses.
For Chromecast with Google TV, use the included remote to browse and open apps directly on the TV without needing your phone. The Google TV interface organizes content across all your streaming services in one place.
You can also mirror your entire Android phone screen to the TV through the Google Home app. This is useful for sharing photos or showing a website on the big screen. iPhone screen mirroring is not supported on Chromecast.
If the Chromecast loses its Wi-Fi connection, open the Google Home app, find the device, and tap Settings to reconnect. For a full reset, hold the button on the Chromecast itself for about 25 seconds until the indicator light blinks.
