How to Check and Improve Your Credit Score

Understand your credit score, check it for free, and learn practical steps to improve it.

    1

    Check your score for free

    ~15s
Many banks show your score in their app. Credit Karma (free app) shows TransUnion and Equifax scores. Discover Credit Scorecard works even if you're not a customer. Checking your own score never hurts it.
    2

    What the numbers mean

    ~15s
300-579: Poor. 580-669: Fair. 670-739: Good. 740-799: Very Good. 800-850: Excellent. A 740+ score gets you the best loan rates and credit card offers.
    3

    What affects your score

    ~15s
Payment history (35%): Pay bills on time — this is the biggest factor. Credit utilization (30%): use less than 30% of your credit limit. Length of history (15%). New credit (10%). Credit mix (10%).
    4

    Pay bills on time

    ~15s
Set up autopay for at least the minimum payment on all bills. Even one late payment can drop your score 100+ points. Set calendar reminders as backup.
    5

    Lower your credit utilization

    ~15s
If your credit card limit is $5,000, keep your balance below $1,500 (30%). Below $500 (10%) is even better. Pay down balances or request credit limit increases.
    6

    Check for errors

    ~15s
Get your free credit report at annualcreditreport.com. Check for accounts you didn't open, incorrect balances, or wrong personal information. Dispute errors with the credit bureau online.
    7

    Be patient

    ~15s
Improving credit takes time — usually 3-6 months to see significant changes. Keep paying on time, keep balances low, and avoid opening lots of new accounts at once.
