Direct deposit sends your paycheck, Social Security benefit, pension, or tax refund electronically straight into your bank account — usually on payday before 9 a.m. There is no check to cash, no trip to the bank, and no risk of a check getting lost in the mail.
Setting up direct deposit requires two things: your bank's routing number (a 9-digit number that identifies your bank) and your account number. Both are printed on the bottom of a personal check.
Most employers handle direct deposit through a simple form — either a paper form from HR or an online form in the employee portal. The Social Security Administration (SSA) has its own process through their website or by phone.
The IRS also offers direct deposit for tax refunds. When you file your taxes, you can enter your bank information for direct deposit instead of waiting 4-6 weeks for a paper check. Direct deposit tax refunds usually arrive within 21 days.
One important note: once direct deposit is set up, it usually takes one pay period (one paycheck cycle) to take effect. You may receive one last paper check while the banking system processes the change.
