The Amazon Echo Dot is a small, affordable smart speaker that brings Alexa — Amazon's voice assistant — into any room of your home. It looks like a hockey puck, connects to your Wi-Fi, and responds to voice commands for everything from setting a kitchen timer to playing music, answering questions, controlling smart home devices, and making phone calls to family members.
Setup is done through the Alexa app on your smartphone. The process takes about 10 minutes, and once complete, your Echo Dot is ready to answer questions the moment you say "Alexa." You do not need to press any button — Alexa is always listening for its wake word, though it only records and processes audio after it hears "Alexa."
The Echo Dot connects to your existing Wi-Fi network. It does not require a separate internet plan or a subscription. It uses the same internet connection you already have at home. Some features, like Amazon Music without ads, do require an Amazon Prime membership or a separate Amazon Music Unlimited subscription, but the basic features — weather, timers, alarms, questions and answers, and smart home control — are completely free.
Privacy is a common question about Echo devices. The microphone can be physically muted by pressing the button on the top of the device — a red light confirms that Alexa cannot hear anything. You can also review and delete your voice history in the Alexa app at any time under Settings > Alexa Privacy.
The Echo Dot comes in several sizes and generations. The 5th generation (released 2022) is the most recent as of this writing and includes a built-in temperature sensor and a motion sensor for automations. The speaker is small but adequate for clear voice responses and casual music listening. If you want a lot better sound for music, the Echo (standard size) or Echo Studio are larger options with improved speakers.
