When email stops updating — new messages stop arriving, or they appear hours late, or the app shows old messages and will not refresh — it is rarely a broken app. It is almost always one of six issues: a network problem, an outage at your email provider, a password change you forgot about, a full mailbox, a corrupted account setup, or (on mobile) the app being throttled by battery-saving settings.
The fastest first step: pull down on the inbox (on phone) or click the Refresh button (on desktop) to force a manual sync. If that fails, check Downdetector.com or Google for "[Gmail | Outlook | iCloud] outage" — sometimes the provider is down and there is nothing to fix on your end. If the provider is fine, the next most common cause is a password change. Google, Microsoft, and Apple regularly force password resets when they detect suspicious activity, and until you re-enter the new password in your mail app, it silently fails.
If the basics are fine, try force-closing the app completely and reopening it. If that does not work, remove the email account entirely from your device and add it back fresh. This sounds drastic but takes only five minutes, and it fixes the majority of persistent sync issues because it resets any corrupted tokens or cached settings. One more common cause: a full mailbox. If you are over quota (typically 15GB free on Gmail, 15GB on iCloud, 15GB on Outlook), new mail bounces back. Clean out large attachments first (the "Larger than 10MB" filter is your friend).
