    Forgot Your Email Password — Step-by-Step Recovery

    Go to the email provider sign-in page

    Open a web browser and go to: gmail.com (for Google/Gmail), yahoo.com (for Yahoo Mail), or outlook.com (for Outlook/Hotmail/MSN). On the sign-in page, enter your email address. Do not guess your password — click 'Forgot password' (Gmail), 'I forgot my password' (Yahoo), or 'Forgot my password' (Outlook).

    Choose how to verify your identity

    The website will offer you one or more recovery options: a text message to your phone, a call to your phone, a message to a backup email address, or security questions. Choose the one you have access to. For most people, a text message to a cell phone is the fastest.

    Enter the verification code

    If you chose text message, check your phone for a message from Google, Yahoo, or Microsoft. It will contain a 6-digit code. Type that code into the box on the computer screen within a few minutes (the codes expire quickly). If you chose backup email, check that inbox for a similar code.

    Warning

    No legitimate company will ever call you and ask you to read them a verification code out loud. If someone calls and asks for your code, hang up — it is a scam.

    Create a new password

    After verifying your identity, you will be taken to a page where you can set a new password. Choose something you will remember but that is hard for others to guess. A good approach: think of three unrelated words and combine them with a number, like 'umbrella-guitar-47-cloud'. Write your new password down in a safe place — not on a sticky note on the computer, but in a notebook kept somewhere secure.

    Sign in and update your recovery information

    After resetting, sign in with your new password. While you are in your account, go to Security Settings and make sure your recovery phone number and backup email are current and accurate. Having updated recovery info prevents future lockouts.

    If you can't verify — contact support

    If you no longer have access to the recovery phone or email, the process is harder. Gmail has an Account Recovery form at accounts.google.com/signin/recovery that asks you additional questions about your account history. Yahoo and Outlook have similar forms. This process can take several days. If the account was a work or school email, contact your IT department. They can reset it directly.
