How to Lock Down Your Facebook Privacy Settings (2026)

Protect your personal information on Facebook with these essential privacy settings.

    1

    Open Privacy Settings

    ~15s
Open the Facebook app or go to facebook.com. Tap the menu icon (three lines or your profile picture) > Settings & Privacy > Settings > Privacy. You will see a list of privacy controls.
    2

    Control who sees your posts

    ~23s
Under "Who can see your future posts?" change this from "Public" to "Friends." This means only people you have added as friends can see what you share. You can also go back and change old posts: tap "Limit Past Posts" to change all previous public posts to Friends only at once.

    Quick Tip

You can also set individual posts to "Only Me" if you want to save something privately without sharing it.

    3

    Control who can find you

    ~15s
Under "How people find and contact you": set "Who can send you friend requests?" to "Friends of Friends." Set "Who can look you up using your email/phone?" to "Friends." This prevents strangers from finding your profile through your contact information.
    4

    Review your profile information

    ~15s
Go to your profile and tap "About." Review each section: work, education, places lived, contact info, family. Remove anything you do not want public. For each item, tap the audience selector (globe or friends icon) to control who can see it.
    5

    Check your tagged photos

    ~15s
Go to Settings > Privacy > Profile and Tagging. Turn on "Review tags people add to your posts before they appear" and "Review posts you are tagged in before they appear on your profile." This gives you control over what others post about you.
