Amazon's Fire HD tablets are among the most affordable tablets available in the United States, and they work well for everyday tasks like reading books, watching movies and TV shows, video calling family, browsing the web, and playing casual games. They come in several sizes — 8-inch, 10-inch, and 11-inch — and are regularly available for well under $100, especially during Amazon sales.
Before you do anything else, charge the tablet fully using the included USB cable. This can take a couple of hours from a completely dead battery. Once charged to 100%, press and hold the power button on the side until the screen lights up.
The first-time setup wizard walks you through the process step by step. First, choose your language and tap "Get Started." Then connect to your Wi-Fi network — tap your network's name in the list and enter your password.
Next, sign in with your Amazon account. If you have an Amazon account (for shopping, Prime, or Kindle), use the same one here. Your Fire tablet is designed around Amazon services, so signing in with your account immediately gives you access to your Kindle books, your Prime Video library, and Amazon Music. If you do not have an Amazon account, you can create one during setup.
After signing in, your tablet will download updates, which can take several minutes — especially on a new device. Let this complete before you start exploring.
The home screen organizes your content into rows by category: Books, Videos, Apps, Music, Audible, and a web browser. Swipe left and right within each row to see more. Tapping "Games & Apps" opens the Amazon Appstore, where you can download free and paid apps.
To make reading more comfortable, open the Settings (swipe down from the top of the screen, tap the gear icon), then tap "Display," and adjust brightness and font size to your preference. The Night Mode or Blue Shade options reduce screen brightness and blue light for reading at night.
A microSD card slot is located on the side of the tablet. Inserting a microSD card (sold separately, up to 1 TB) dramatically increases storage space for downloaded movies, books, and photos. This is especially useful if you plan to watch downloaded videos without Wi-Fi.
For families with children, Amazon Kids (formerly FreeTime) provides a curated, ad-free environment with age-appropriate content, daily time limits, and educational goals. A one-month free trial is included with most new Fire tablets. You can set up individual profiles for children through Parental Controls in Settings.
