Amazon Fire Kids Tablet: Setup, Parental Controls, and Making It Safe for Young Children

The Amazon Fire Kids tablet is designed for children from the start. Learn how to set it up, configure parental controls, and keep it safe for your child.

Charge the tablet and power it on

Remove the tablet from its case and connect it to the included USB-C charger. Allow it to charge for at least 20 minutes before turning it on. Press and hold the power button on the top edge for a few seconds to start the tablet. You will see the Amazon logo, followed by a welcome setup screen.

Connect to Wi-Fi and sign in to your Amazon account

Follow the on-screen setup steps to connect to your home Wi-Fi network. Select your network name and enter your Wi-Fi password. After connecting, sign in with your Amazon account — this links the tablet to your account so you can manage it from the Parent Dashboard. If you do not have an Amazon account, you will be prompted to create one.

Set up a child profile

When setup asks "Who will use this tablet?" tap "Add a Child Profile." Enter your child's name and date of birth. Amazon uses the date of birth to set the appropriate content age range — 3 to 5, 6 to 8, or 9 to 12. You can adjust this range later. The child profile automatically enables Amazon Kids mode and connects to your Parent Dashboard.

Warning

Make sure to enter your child's actual date of birth, not an approximate age. Amazon's content filtering is calibrated to age ranges, and an incorrect birth year can result in your child seeing content meant for older or younger children.

Review and adjust content settings

After the profile is created, go to amazon.com/parentdashboard or open the Parent Dashboard app. Tap your child's profile and look at the "Content" section. Review what types of content are enabled — books, videos, apps, Amazon Kids+ content — and toggle off anything you do not want included. You can also set specific age ratings for videos and apps.

Set daily time limits and a bedtime

In the Parent Dashboard, set a daily screen time limit for your child's profile. The Fire Kids tablet will automatically lock when the daily limit is reached and display a message telling the child that their time is up. You can also set a "Curfew" — a time of day when the tablet locks completely, regardless of how much time was used. This is useful for preventing late-night use.

Quick Tip: Set the curfew 30 minutes before your child's bedtime to build in wind-down time between the tablet locking and lights out.

Enable the "Learn First" educational goal

In the Content Settings of your child's dashboard, find "Learn First" or "Educational Goals." Turn this on and choose how many minutes of educational content are required before entertainment content becomes available. Reading books, using educational apps, and watching educational videos all count toward the goal. This one feature is often cited by parents as the most effective tool in the entire platform.

Amazon Fire Kids tablets are purpose-built tablets for children, sold in versions for different age ranges — the Fire 7 Kids for ages 3 to 7, and the Fire HD 8 Kids and HD 10 Kids for ages 6 and up. The tablets run a special version of the Amazon Fire interface called Amazon Kids. Children cannot access browser settings, download unapproved apps, or make purchases while in the Kids profile.
