Why Is My Phone Battery Dying So Fast? (And How to Fix It)

If your phone battery isn't lasting the day, these simple changes can double your battery life.

    1

    Lower your screen brightness

    ~22s
Your screen is the biggest battery drain. Pull down from the top of your screen and drag the brightness slider down to around 50%. Or enable Auto-Brightness: on iPhone go to Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Auto-Brightness; on Android go to Settings > Display > Adaptive brightness.

    Quick Tip

Even dropping brightness from 80% to 50% can add an hour or more of battery life.

    2

Turn off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth when not in use

    ~18s
If you are out and not using Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, turn them off. On both iPhone and Android, you can do this from the quick settings panel — swipe down from the top of the screen and tap the Wi-Fi or Bluetooth button to toggle them off.
    3

Check which apps are draining your battery

    ~20s
iPhone: go to Settings > Battery and scroll down to see apps and their battery usage percentages. Android: go to Settings > Battery > Battery Usage. Delete or restrict background activity for any apps using an unusually high percentage.

    Quick Tip

Social media apps like Facebook and Instagram are frequent battery hogs. Try restricting their background activity first.

    4

    Reduce background app refresh

    ~17s
This setting lets apps update in the background even when you are not using them — and it drains your battery. iPhone: Settings > General > Background App Refresh — turn it off entirely or set it to Wi-Fi only. Android: Settings > Apps > [app name] > Battery > Restricted.
    5

Enable Low Power Mode or Battery Saver

    ~18s
iPhone: Settings > Battery > Low Power Mode. Android: Settings > Battery > Battery Saver. This reduces background activity and dims notifications to stretch your remaining battery. Most people only lose features they do not need.

    Quick Tip

On iPhone you can also say "Siri, turn on Low Power Mode" to activate it hands-free.

    6

    Check your battery health (iPhone)

    ~18s
Go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging. If Maximum Capacity is below 80%, your battery has degraded and may need replacing. Apple charges a set fee for battery replacement at any Apple Store or authorized service provider.
