    Make a Slow Windows PC Faster (No Cost, No Risky Tools)

    Restart your computer (do not skip this)

    It sounds basic, but most people leave their Windows PC running for weeks at a time. Each program you open uses memory. Some never fully release it. Restarting clears everything. Click the Start menuPower buttonRestart. Wait for the PC to fully boot up before testing again.

    Disable programs that auto-start with Windows

    Many apps install themselves to launch when Windows boots, slowing the boot process. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. Click the "Startup apps" tab. You see a list of programs that run automatically. For each one you do not need (Spotify, Adobe, manufacturer "helpers" — leave Microsoft items alone), right-click and choose Disable. They still work when you launch them manually. They no longer slow boot.

    Warning

    Do not disable anything labeled "Microsoft," "Windows Defender," or anything you do not recognize. When in doubt, leave it on. Disabling system items can break Windows.

    Free up disk space with Storage Sense

    A nearly-full hard drive slows Windows dramatically. Open SettingsSystemStorage. Turn on "Storage Sense" — this automatically deletes temporary files and old downloads. Then click "Cleanup recommendations" to see what is using space. Common big offenders: old Windows update files, recycle bin, downloads folder.

    Run Windows Defender to scan for malware

    Windows comes with a free, excellent antivirus called Microsoft Defender. Open the Start menu, search for "Windows Security," and click it. Click "Virus and threat protection," then "Quick scan." Let it finish — about 2 to 5 minutes. If anything is found, follow the prompts to remove it.

    Quick Tip: For deeper checks, click "Scan options" and run a Microsoft Defender Offline scan once a year. This restarts the PC and scans before Windows fully loads, catching things that hide while Windows is running.

    Turn off animations to feel snappier

    Windows animations look nice but slow things down on older PCs. Open SettingsAccessibilityVisual effects. Turn off "Animation effects." The PC instantly feels faster, especially when opening menus and switching apps.
