    Write down what you see on the blue screen

    Before you reach for your phone, note the Recovery Key ID shown on the blue BitLocker screen. It is a short code that looks like "A1B2-C3D4." You will need this to match the correct key in your Microsoft account if you have multiple devices.

    Find your BitLocker recovery key using another device

    On your phone, tablet, or another computer, open a web browser and go to account.microsoft.com. Sign in with the same Microsoft account you use on the locked computer (the email address and password you use to sign into Windows). Once signed in, tap or click "Devices" in the left menu, then look for "BitLocker data recovery" or "View recovery key." Your 48-digit recovery key will appear. It looks like groups of numbers separated by dashes.

    Enter the 48-digit recovery key on the locked computer

    Go back to the locked computer. Use your keyboard to type the 48-digit recovery key exactly as shown in your Microsoft account. The key entry field is separated into groups of six digits — type them in order. When you finish entering all 48 digits, press Enter or click the Continue button. Windows will unlock and boot normally.

    Type slowly and carefully. The recovery screen does not show you what you are typing. So it helps to read the digits in groups of six.

    Install the follow-up fix from Windows Update

    Once you are logged in to Windows, install the latest update to prevent this happening again. Click the Start buttonSettingsWindows UpdateCheck for updates. Download and install any updates that appear, then restart your computer. Microsoft released a follow-up patch that addresses the April 2026 BitLocker trigger.

The screen asks you to type a 48-digit recovery key. If this happened to you, do not panic — your computer is not broken and all your files are safe. The fix is free and takes about 5 minutes.

    Here is what happened: Windows has a security feature called BitLocker that encrypts your data to protect it if your laptop is ever lost or stolen. Normally BitLocker runs silently in the background.
