Open your web browser and go to annualcreditreport.com. Check the address bar carefully — there are copycat sites with similar names. The real site has no flashy ads, no "free trial" offers, and no credit card requirement. If a site asks for credit card information, it is not the right one.

Fill in your personal information

You will be asked for your full name, current address (previous address if you moved recently), date of birth, and Social Security number. This information is used only to verify your identity with the bureaus — it is not stored for marketing. Use your legal name exactly as it appears on tax records.

Select which reports you want

You can request reports from Experian, Equifax, TransUnion, or all three at once. A good strategy is to request one bureau every four months instead of all three at once — that way, you get ongoing visibility into your credit throughout the year. For a first-time check or if you suspect fraud, request all three.

Answer the security questions

Each bureau asks questions only you should know — "Which of these streets have you lived on?" "What was the original amount of a mortgage you had in 2015?" Some answers may be "None of the above". Take your time. If you get locked out, the bureau will mail a report instead (which is still free).

Review the report carefully

Download the PDF or print it. Look for: unknown accounts or credit cards you did not open, wrong addresses, late payments on accounts you paid on time, and hard inquiries from lenders you never applied to. Any of these can be signs of identity theft. Dispute errors in writing directly with the bureau — each report includes instructions.

Be careful: a search for "free credit report" turns up dozens of sites that will offer you a "free" report in exchange for signing up for a paid monitoring service. Some of these will charge you monthly after a trial period. AnnualCreditReport.com is the only site authorized by the federal government, and it never asks for a credit card.

Since 2023, the bureaus have voluntarily extended access to weekly free reports from each bureau — a holdover from pandemic-era rules. That means you can check your credit any week of the year, for free. Your report will show every account in your name, your payment history, credit limits, balances, and any inquiries from lenders. What it does NOT show is your credit score — the score is a separate product, often available free from your bank, credit card company, or services like Credit Karma.
