    HDMI vs DisplayPort vs DVI — Which Cable to Use

    Know what each cable carries

    HDMI carries video and audio, plus things like HDR and CEC (remote control signals). DisplayPort carries video and audio with higher bandwidth for high refresh rates. DVI is older and carries video only. You will need a separate audio cable if you use DVI. VGA (the old blue plug with screws) is analog video only and has been outdated for over a decade.

    Match the HDMI version to what you need

    HDMI 1.4 = 1080p 60Hz. HDMI 2.0 = 4K 60Hz. HDMI 2.1 = 4K 120Hz and 8K. For a standard 4K TV, HDMI 2.0 is fine. For PS5, Xbox Series X, or a 4K gaming monitor at 120Hz, you need HDMI 2.1 — and the cable must be labeled "Ultra High Speed HDMI".

    Match the DisplayPort version to what you need

    DisplayPort 1.2 = 4K 60Hz. DisplayPort 1.4 = 4K 120Hz / 8K 60Hz with DSC. DisplayPort 2.0 and 2.1 = 8K 60Hz with HDR and beyond. DisplayPort cables are usually backward compatible, so a newer DP 2.1 cable will work on any DP port. Look for "VESA Certified" on the label for guaranteed performance.

    Pick the right cable for the device

    TVs and home theater gear: HDMI (most TVs do not have DisplayPort at all). Gaming PCs and high-refresh gaming monitors: DisplayPort — the most bandwidth and best support for G-Sync and FreeSync. Older office monitors from before 2015: DVI or HDMI. Mac to external monitor: USB-C to DisplayPort or HDMI, or Thunderbolt.

    Use adapters when you have to

    HDMI-to-DisplayPort adapters, DVI-to-HDMI adapters, and USB-C-to-HDMI adapters all exist and work for most setups. Be aware: adapters usually cap at the lowest standard of the two cables. A DVI-to-HDMI adapter maxes out at 1080p (DVI's limit), no matter how fancy the HDMI cable.

    There are three display cables you are most likely to run into today: HDMI, DisplayPort, and the older DVI. All three carry a video signal from your computer or media device to a screen. HDMI and DisplayPort also carry audio (so you can hear sound through TV or monitor speakers without a separate cable). DVI is older, video-only, and mostly found on older monitors and desktop computers from before about 2015.

    Where it gets confusing is the versions. HDMI 1.4 tops out at 1080p at 60 frames per second — fine for older TVs but not enough for 4K. HDMI 2.0 handles 4K at 60Hz. HDMI 2.1 handles 4K at 120Hz and up to 8K. DisplayPort 1.4 supports 4K at 120Hz and 8K at 60Hz. DisplayPort 2.0 (and 2.1) handles 8K at 60Hz with HDR, and up to 16K. A cable rated for an older version will not magically carry a newer signal — if your setup is 4K at 120Hz, you need a cable that supports that speed.

    As a general rule of thumb: use HDMI for TVs, game consoles, streaming boxes, and any home theater gear (it is the only one most TVs accept). Use DisplayPort for gaming PCs and higher-end computer monitors. It has slightly more bandwidth and better support for high refresh rates. Use DVI only for older monitors that do not have newer ports. Adapters between them exist (HDMI to DisplayPort, DVI to HDMI) and work fine for most uses.
