One of the most confusing things in modern tech is that "USB-C" describes only the physical shape of the connector — that small oval plug that goes in either way up. It does not tell you anything about what the port or cable can do. Two USB-C ports that look identical on the outside can behave completely differently. One might be a slow 480 Mbps USB 2.0 port that only charges your phone; another might be a 40 Gbps Thunderbolt 4 port that drives a 4K monitor AND transfers a full movie in seconds.
The actual capability is determined by which standard the port supports: USB 2.0 (480 Mbps — mostly for charging and slow data), USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5 Gbps), USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbps), USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 (20 Gbps), USB 4 (20 or 40 Gbps), and Thunderbolt 3 / 4 / 5 (40-80 Gbps). Thunderbolt is a premium Intel-designed standard that includes USB 4 speeds plus extras: driving external monitors, connecting external GPUs, and daisy-chaining multiple devices off one port.
Manufacturers often print tiny icons or text next to the port to tell you what you have: a lightning bolt for Thunderbolt, the letters "SS" for SuperSpeed USB, or a number like "10" for 10 Gbps. On older laptops, some USB-C ports only do charging and display and cannot even transfer data at USB 3 speed — which is why a cable that works for your phone might fail to drive a monitor.
