Download Garmin Connect and create your account

    ~26s
Search for "Garmin Connect" in the App Store or Google Play and install the free app. Open it and tap "Sign Up" to create a free Garmin account with your email address. Enter your age, height, and weight — these are used to calculate accurate calorie burn estimates and other health metrics. You will use this same account to log into Garmin's website at connect.garmin.com if you ever want to view your data on a larger screen.
    2

Pair your Garmin watch to the app

    ~39s
Make sure Bluetooth is turned on on your phone (go to Settings > Bluetooth and confirm it is toggled on). On your Garmin watch, navigate to Settings > Phone > Pair Phone. The exact menu path varies by watch model — consult your watch's setup card or the Garmin support page for your specific model. In Garmin Connect, tap the device icon or go to More > Garmin Devices > Add Device and follow the pairing instructions. The process takes about two minutes.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: If pairing fails, restart both your phone and your watch and try again. Make sure no other device is actively connected to the watch via Bluetooth — Garmin watches typically connect to one phone at a time.

    3

    Explore your daily health stats

    ~41s
The Garmin Connect home screen shows your daily snapshot: steps taken versus your goal, floors climbed, calories burned, heart rate, sleep score from last night, stress level, and Body Battery — Garmin's name for an energy estimate that combines sleep quality, recovery, and activity. Tap any metric to see a detailed chart with hourly or day-by-day trends. The sleep section is particularly detailed, showing light sleep, deep sleep, REM sleep, and any periods of wakefulness.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: The Body Battery score (if your watch supports it) is one of the most practically useful metrics. A high score in the morning means you are well-rested and recovered. A low score means your body needs rest. It helps explain days when you feel fine on paper but low on energy in practice.

    4

    Review your workout history

    ~27s
After any recorded workout — a run, walk, bike ride, or strength session started from your watch — the full activity syncs to Garmin Connect when you bring your phone nearby. Tap the Activities tab to see a list of past workouts. Tap any activity to see the complete breakdown: GPS map of your route, pace or speed at every point, heart rate zones, elevation, and training load. For runs, Garmin also shows metrics like cadence (steps per minute) and vertical oscillation.

    Set goals and join challenges

    ~38s
Tap the Challenges tab (or look under the More menu) to find step challenges and badge awards. You can create a personal step goal — a daily target you are trying to hit consistently — or join a group challenge with friends or coworkers. When you add friends through Garmin Connect, you can see each other's step counts in friendly competition. Many people find this social accountability motivating for building a regular walking habit.

    Warning

Do not set an unrealistic initial goal. Starting with 8,000 steps per day when you currently average 3,000 often leads to discouragement. Set a goal 10–20% above your current average and increase it gradually over several weeks. Gradual progress is more sustainable than dramatic initial targets.

If you own a Garmin fitness watch or GPS watch, Garmin Connect is the companion app that brings all of your data to life. The watch collects information throughout the day — steps, heart rate, sleep patterns, stress levels, workouts, and GPS tracks — and Garmin Connect displays that data on your phone in clear charts and summaries that are easy to read even if you have no background in fitness tracking.

Garmin Connect is free and is required to get the full value from any Garmin device. Without it, your watch tracks data on its own but does not sync with the broader platform, share with health apps on your phone, or let you configure many of the watch's settings. Setting up Garmin Connect is one of the first things to do after buying any Garmin product.

The app is available for iPhone and Android. It connects to your watch via Bluetooth (a short-range wireless connection that works within about 30 feet). Each time you bring your phone near your watch — such as when you arrive home — the watch syncs its latest data to the app automatically. You do not need to manually trigger a sync in most cases.

Garmin Connect also serves as the hub for software updates. When Garmin releases a new firmware update (internal software) for your watch, it appears in the app and downloads automatically when connected to Wi-Fi. Keeping your watch's software current ensures you have the latest features and bug fixes.

Beyond individual data, Garmin Connect includes a social feature called Garmin Connect Groups where you can join or create step challenges with friends and family — a popular way to stay motivated when you have people counting on you to show up.
