Google Docs: A Complete Beginner's Guide

Create, edit, and share documents for free using Google Docs — no software installation needed.

    1

    Access Google Docs

    ~15s
Go to docs.google.com in any web browser and sign in with your Google account. Or go to Google Drive, click New > Google Docs. No software to install — it works in your browser.
    2

    Create a new document

    ~15s
Click the + (Blank) button or choose a template (resume, letter, report). Templates give you a professional starting point. Start typing — your document saves automatically.
    3

    Format text

    ~15s
Select text and use the toolbar: Bold (Ctrl+B), Italic (Ctrl+I), font size, font style, text color. Use heading styles (Normal Text dropdown) to organize longer documents.
    4

    Add images and tables

    ~15s
Insert > Image to add photos from your computer, web, or Google Drive. Insert > Table to create organized rows and columns. Drag edges to resize.
    5

    Share with others

    ~15s
Click the Share button (top-right). Enter email addresses. Choose permission: Viewer (read-only), Commenter (can suggest), or Editor (can change). Send the invitation.
    6

    Collaborate in real time

    ~15s
Multiple people can edit the same document simultaneously. You see their cursors and changes in real time. Use comments (Ctrl+Alt+M) to discuss without changing the text.
    7

    Download and print

    ~15s
File > Download to save as Word (.docx), PDF, or plain text. File > Print (Ctrl+P) to print. Your documents are always accessible from any device at docs.google.com.
