Google Maps is a free navigation app available on both iPhone and Android. It gives you turn-by-turn directions for driving, walking, biking, or taking public transportation (bus, train, or subway) to any address or named place.
You can use Google Maps even if you have never used a navigation app before. You type in where you want to go, choose how you are getting there, and the app guides you step by step with spoken directions through your phone's speaker.
For driving, Google Maps shows your route on a map and speaks each turn before you reach it — "In 500 feet, turn right on Maple Street." It also shows you real-time traffic conditions and will automatically suggest a faster route if a traffic jam appears ahead.
For walking, it shows your route on a walking map and gives directions at intersections. For public transit, it shows which bus or train to take, where to board, and when it is due to arrive.
Google Maps works best when your phone has a good GPS signal and a data connection. GPS usually works well outdoors in open areas but can be less accurate inside buildings or in areas with tall buildings on both sides.
Before starting a trip, it is a good idea to enter your destination and review the route while you are stationary. This way you know what to expect and can spot anything that looks wrong before you start driving or walking.
The app remembers places you have searched for recently, making it faster to navigate to places you go regularly. You can also search for categories like "gas station near me" or "pharmacy" and Maps will show options nearby.
