When you're driving somewhere and want your family to know when you'll arrive, Google Maps makes it very easy to share your live location and estimated time of arrival directly from inside the navigation. The person you share with doesn't need to have Google Maps open — they receive a link they can tap to see your progress on a map in any browser.
This is different from sharing your general location through your phone's settings. When you share your ETA in Google Maps, the person sees your exact route, how far along you are, and the exact time you're expected to arrive — and it updates automatically as you drive.
Sharing ETA is useful in many everyday situations: - Letting a family member know when you'll get home - Telling a friend you're on your way to meet them - Keeping a caregiver informed of your travel progress - Giving a medical appointment destination to someone who may need to pick you up
The share updates live while you're moving, so the estimated arrival time adjusts if you hit traffic, stop for gas, or take a different route. You can stop sharing at any time by tapping "Stop Sharing" in the app.
The recipient sees your location on a map in their web browser — they don't need to download any app. However, if they also use Google Maps and you share via Gmail or Messages, they can also track you directly in their own Google Maps app.
