How to Set Up Automatic Photo Backup with Google Photos

Google Photos can back up every photo and video on your phone automatically so they're safe even if your phone is lost or broken.

    1

    Download Google Photos if needed

    ~15s
Google Photos is pre-installed on most Android phones. If you don't have it, search "Google Photos" in the Google Play Store or Apple App Store and install it for free. Sign in with your Google account (Gmail) when it opens.
    2

    Turn on Backup

    ~26s
Open the Google Photos app. Tap your profile picture (circle with your initial or photo) in the top right corner. Tap "Photos settings," then "Backup." Make sure "Backup" is toggled on. Google Photos will start uploading your existing photos and will continue automatically for every new photo you take.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: The backup status is shown at the top of the Photos app. A green checkmark means everything is backed up. A cloud with a loading bar means it's still uploading.

    3

    Choose your storage quality

    ~17s
Google Photos asks which quality to use. "Storage saver" compresses photos very slightly — you probably won't notice the difference — and doesn't count against your 15 GB limit. "Original quality" keeps photos at full resolution but counts toward storage. For most people, Storage saver is the better choice.
    4

Set backup to use Wi-Fi only

    ~15s
In the same Backup settings, look for "Back up over mobile data/cellular" and make sure it's turned off unless you have an unlimited data plan. This way, uploads happen over Wi-Fi and won't eat into your monthly phone data.
    5

Access your photos from any device

    ~21s
Go to photos.google.com on any computer or open the Google Photos app on any phone. Sign in with your Google account and all your backed-up photos will be there. You can view, download, share, or print them.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: Google Photos automatically groups photos by date, place, and people, making it easy to find photos from a specific trip, holiday, or year.

Losing your phone is bad. Losing all the photos on it is heartbreaking. Google Photos solves this by automatically backing up every photo and video you take to the cloud — so if your phone is lost, stolen, broken, or replaced, every photo is still there waiting for you on any device you sign into.

Google Photos offers 15 GB of free storage, shared across your Google account. For most people, that's enough to hold thousands of photos. If you need more, Google One storage plans start at $1.99/month for 100 GB.

Once you set up automatic backup, you never need to think about it again. Your photos go from your camera to the cloud in the background, usually within minutes over Wi-Fi. This guide gets you set up in about five minutes.
