How to Use Google Photos: Store, Organize & Share Your Pictures

Back up your photos automatically, search by faces or places, create albums, and share memories with family.

    1

    Set up Google Photos

    ~19s
Download "Google Photos" from your app store (it may already be installed on Android). Sign in with your Google account. When prompted, turn on "Back up & sync" — this automatically saves every photo you take to your Google account in the cloud. You get 15 GB of free storage shared across Gmail and Google Drive.
    2

    Find any photo instantly

    ~19s
The magic of Google Photos is its search. Tap the search bar and type anything: "beach," "dog," "birthday cake," "New York," or a person's name. Google's AI recognizes objects, places, and faces in your photos. You can also browse by "People & Pets," "Places," or "Things" in the search tab to see your photos organized automatically.
    3

    Create and share albums

    ~25s
Tap LibraryCreate Album. Name it (e.g., "Grandkids 2026" or "Garden Progress"). Select photos to add. To share: open the album → tap the Share icon → enter email addresses or create a link. Shared albums let others view and even add their own photos — perfect for family events where everyone takes pictures.

    Quick Tip

Create a shared family album and invite everyone to add their photos. You'll end up with a wonderful collection from every perspective.

    4

    Edit photos

    ~16s
Open any photo and tap "Edit" (the sliders icon). You can: Crop and rotate, Adjust brightness/contrast/color, Apply filters (like "Vivid" or "West"), Use "Magic Eraser" (on newer phones) to remove unwanted objects, and use "Enhance" for one-tap auto-improvement. All edits are non-destructive — you can always revert to the original.
    5

    Free up phone storage

    ~33s
Once your photos are backed up to the cloud, you can delete them from your phone to free up space without losing them. Go to Google Photos → tap your profile icon → "Free up space." The app will show you how much space you can recover by removing already-backed-up photos from your device. They remain safely in your Google Photos cloud.

    Warning

Before using "Free up space," make sure "Back up & sync" has finished uploading all your photos. Check for the green checkmark in backup settings.
